Open models now run on your machine, and they hold up
Ollama and Open WebUI made running capable models locally trivial. Less API billing and data that never leaves home.
The 2026 shift is not just that good open models exist, it is that running them became trivial. Ollama spins up DeepSeek, Qwen, Gemma or gpt-oss with a single command, and Open WebUI gives them a self-hosted chat interface compatible with OpenAI-style APIs. The result: an AI stack that runs entirely on your own hardware.
For people who build software this changes the math. Prototyping against a local model removes the per-token bill during development, and for sensitive data it keeps everything on your own machine or server. It does not replace frontier models for everything, but for classification, extraction, drafts or RAG it is often more than enough.
The engineering take: start local to iterate cheaply and move up to a bigger model only when the task demands it. It is the same criterion we use when we set up assistants for clients.
