What it is and why it matters

Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform, positioned as a Figma alternative for product teams. Being open source, it cannot be bought out from under you, a point the video ties to some teams' nervousness after Adobe stepped in. It is oriented toward developer handoff, generating code from the design.

Where we saw it

Cloud Codes 2026-07-03 The video presents Penpot as the open-source design tool that cannot be bought out and closed off, tying that argument to some teams' unease after Adobe's approach to Figma. It stresses developer handoff: when you design a component on the canvas, Penpot gives you clean code directly, with no plugin, no export hack and no paywall in the middle. 10 Github Repos That Will Kill Your Monthly Subscriptions
